Agape (Ancient Greek ἀγάπη, agápē) is “love: the highest form of love, charity; the love of God for man and of man for God.” Not to be confused with philia – brotherly love – agape embraces a universal, unconditional love that transcends, that serves regardless of circumstances.
“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through EVERY circumstance.” – 1 Corinthians 13:7 (NLT)
It was love that kept Jesus on the cross.
- He sacrificed His life
- He endured the cruelty of the cross
But is was not only that. In Hebrews it is written that Jesus, for the JOY that was set before Him, endured the cross.
We easily say that we love God and we love people.
John writes, “…let us not merely SAY that we love each other, but to SHOW the truth by our ACTIONS.”
Whatever we do that is not motivated by love will not be sustainable. Whether it is studies, our work or career, our relationships, or giving.
Paul also writes to the Corinthians that three things will LAST FOREVER:
…and the greatest of these is LOVE.
I love Jesus. I love France. I love Marseille. I love Paris. I love….
It is love that compels me and motivated me to move to France in 2013 to love and serve the French. I love Jesus and His love has transformed me and has been poured into my heart. I cannot but love the French as a result.
It has not been easy and over the last three years I have been challenged to the core of my being about and in many things. However, it has also been a joy and a privilege and there is nothing else that I would rather be doing than loving and serving the French.
Let LOVE be your HIGHEST GOAL and MOTIVATION. Let us be motivated by love daily to give joyfully of our time, talents and treasures to the Kingdom of God.
You can GIVE without LOVING…
You cannot LOVE without GIVING.
What motivates you?
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs
